Job Description

The Utility Locating Technician role is to ensure the safety of excavation projects by accurately identifying and marking the location of utilities such as gas lines, water pipes, electrical cables, and communication lines. Using specialized industrial standard equipment to locate underground utilities and structures and identify anomalies or irregularities in subsurface geophysical data. This role works with with construction teams, engineers, and utility companies to prevent damage to existing infrastructure and minimize the risk of accidents.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct ground surveys using GPR equipment to identify and map underground utilities and structures.
  • Interpret GPR data and accurately determine the location, depth, and orientation of buried utilities.
  • Mark the location of underground utilities using paint, flags, or other designated markers according to industry standards and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with construction teams, engineers, and utility companies to coordinate excavation plans and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Provide guidance and recommendations to construction crews regarding the safe excavation and avoidance of utility conflicts.
  • Maintain accurate records of utility locations, survey findings, and project documentation.
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of GPR equipment to ensure accurate readings and optimal performance.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices related to utility locating and GPR techniques.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and procedures to minimize risks and ensure a safe working environment for yourself and others.
  • Communicate effectively with project stakeholders, including clients, contractors, and team members, to provide status updates and address any concerns. Sometimes letting the client know you are not able to effectively locate a specific utility they are looking for due to various reasons.
  • Adheres to safety protocols and procedures outlined by PEA Group.

Qualifications:

Formal Education, Licenses and Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education or training in surveying, geophysics, or related field is preferred.
  • OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) certification or relevant safety training
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Certification or licensure in utility locating or GPR operation may be required depending on regional regulations.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Previous experience working in construction, engineering, or utility management.
  • Proven experience operating GPR equipment and conducting utility locating surveys.
  • Strong understanding of underground utility systems, including gas, water, sewer, electrical, and telecommunications.
  • Proficiency in interpreting GPR data and accurately identifying subsurface features.
  • Familiarity with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) software for mapping and data analysis.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development in the field of utility locating and GPR technology.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Fieldwork involves working outdoors for 8+ hours a day in all types of weather, walking long distances, and standing for extended periods while measurements are taken.

Some assignments may require working in confined spaces or climbing and working at above average heights. While performing these duties, an employee is frequently required to stoop; kneel; sit; talk; hear; stand; walk; use hands and fingers to feel, handle, or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The position lifts heavy objects; the employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds.

The employee lifts, pushes, pulls or carries objects; uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.

Availability

This is a full-time position. Days of work are Monday through Friday and shifts are 8 or 10 hours with the start time varying from 7 a.m. or 8 a.m., overtime and weekends as required.

Travel

As a part of performing this position’s duties, travel will be required to respective job sites in the Southeast Michigan area and potential for select projects throughout the United States.
