Food and Drug Safety Inspection Supervisor

Job Summary

The Food and Drug Safety Inspection Supervisor serves as a first-line leader responsible for overseeing the daily activities, performance, and work quality of Food and Drug Safety Inspectors. This position provides technical guidance, assigns and reviews work, conducts field audits, and ensures all inspectional activities align with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies.

Key Responsibilities

Supervision & Team Leadership

  • Supervises, trains, mentors, and evaluates inspectional staff.
  • Conducts field audits to ensure regulatory accuracy, consistency, and adherence to inspection protocols.
  • Coordinates onboarding, continuing education, and ongoing skills development for staff.
  • Performs joint inspections with staff to assess performance and identify training needs.

Operational Oversight

  • Assigns inspection workloads; monitors productivity, timeliness, and documentation quality.
  • Reviews and approves inspection reports, enforcement recommendations, and corrective actions.
  • Provides technical assistance on complex or escalated field situations.
  • Identifies compliance trends and contributes to program planning and improvement.

Regulatory & Administrative Support

  • Participates in enforcement actions, compliance review meetings, complaint investigations, and recall response activities.
  • Ensures thorough documentation and maintenance of inspection records and personnel performance files.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as:

  • Food Science
  • Microbiology
  • Public Health
  • Environmental Health
  • Or a closely related scientific discipline

Experience

  • Preferably six years of progressively responsible experience in food and drug safety inspection.

Special Requirements

  • Must obtain registration as an Environmental Health Specialist/Sanitarian within 12 months of hire and maintain registration thereafter.
  • Must maintain all required inspectional credentials and certifications.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency with standard professional software applications.
  • Requires strong leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
